The Love That Never Fades

by: Whitney Carter

I trace your name in whispered air,
A love so deep, still resting there.
Not lost, not gone, not out of reach,
But carried soft in all I speak.

Your laughter lingers in the night,
A distant glow, a steady light.
Though time has tried to pull you far,
You shine in me like northern stars.

I see you in the quiet rain,
In moments full of joy and pain.
Grief walks beside me, hand in hand,
But love stands firm—its roots expand.

I honor you in every fight,
In words I write, in dreams at night.
Your strength still lives, it fills my chest,
A bond unbroken, love confessed.

So though the world may shift and change,
And life may move, rework, rearrange,
One truth remains, through light and shade—
Your love, dear heart, will never fade.

Dear Raven,

Grief is love with nowhere to go. That’s what they say, and after all these years, I know it to be true. I never stop loving you. I never stop missing you. Some days, it feels like a dull ache, a whisper of your presence. Other days, it crashes over me like a wave, unexpected and unstoppable.

I remember your laugh, the way it could fill a room and make even the worst days feel lighter. I remember our talks, how we could say so much without even speaking. I remember the way you fought, the way you kept going even when your body was tired. You were my sister, my best friend, my safe space.

I often wonder what life would look like if you were still here. I imagine us side by side, facing the world together, speaking up for warriors like us. But even in your absence, I carry you forward. I see you in the strength I have now, in the way I advocate, in the way I refuse to let this disease define me.

The love never fades

You are not gone, not really. You are in my voice, in my fight, in the love I continue to pour into this world. And though grief still walks beside me, I am learning to embrace it—not as something that holds me back, but as a reminder of how deeply I loved you.

Always and forever,
Whitney

**February is often seen as the month of love, but for many of us, love is more than romance—it’s resilience, it’s grief, and it’s learning to extend the same kindness to ourselves that we so freely give to others. This month, my letters reflect on love in its many forms: the love I shared with my sister Raven, the unexpected ways love has found me, and the journey of honoring loss while embracing self-compassion.**
