At 14 years post–bone marrow transplant and on a powerful journey as a self-taught artist, Mikiel Davis , instagram tag name Merkury.Seven is the embodiment of resilience and creativity. His winning piece, Perseverance, Love, Compassion, and Awareness, is more than art—it’s a personal testament to everything it means to live, survive, and grow as a sickle cell warrior.
Centered in the piece is a heart, part bandaged, part armored.
“The bandages represent restoration and healing,” Merkury explains.
“The metallic plate is strength, and the symbols on the teeth represent the power of words.”
His art tells a layered story—one of physical pain and emotional endurance, of choosing kindness and awareness in a world that often overlooks chronic illness. The work captures not only what Mikiel has lived through, but what he continues to hope for: more support, faster solutions, and a future where warriors like him can live with fewer barriers.

Born with Sickle Cell SS, Mikiel has experienced the depth of this disease, but his creativity and vision have become a source of healing—not just for himself, but for others. Today, he’s beginning to share and sell his artwork, using his talent to inspire change and raise awareness in the most powerful way—by turning his journey into visual storytelling.
