<image:title>Blog - The Undefeated Warrior - As we approach the end of March 2026, I’ll be the first to admit—I wasn’t feeling very proud of myself. My last update was at the end of February, and for a moment, I felt like I was falling behind. But as I look back at this month, I realize that while I might have been quiet on the blog, I have been incredibly loud in the community.</image:title>
<image:caption>March has been a month of planting seeds, standing my ground, and remembering that even when a storm leaves things looking "demolished," if you are still standing, you have already won.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Undefeated Warrior - The Challenge of Balance: Post-Spring Break Reality</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ll be honest with you all—finding balance this week has been a challenge. Spring break has ended, and we are diving straight into the "testing season" for my kids. Between making sure they are prepared and focused for their exams and keeping up with my own new coursework, the juggle is real. I’m reminded that even in the busy-ness, we have to find those moments of quiet to breathe.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Bringing this reflection back to the reality of the last thirty days, the practice of Counting My Blessings: A Warrior’s Thankful Heart became essential. When illness makes the world feel small and difficult, shifting focus to what we have—not what we lack—is revolutionary. My blessings this November were distinct and deeply personal: A Victory Milestone: This month, I had the profound honor of celebrating my 40th birthday. Given the harsh statistics often quoted for Sickle Cell Warriors—with many not expected to reach 18 or 25—reaching four decades is nothing short of a miracle. I am grateful for every year, every lesson, and for the chance to stand as an example that we can live beyond the predictions and truly thrive. A New Resource for the Community: On November 13th, my birthday, I was thrilled to release my first resource: the WSO Warriors Speak Out Wellness Manual. This e-book is located right here on the warriorsspeakout.org website, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to share the knowledge and experience gained over these 40 years to help others on their Warrior journey. I would love to see all the love and support from my community! My Dedicated Care Team and The Power of Community: The professionals, fellow Warriors, and loved ones who provide the anchors that held me steady through the month's storms.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Strength in Scarlet: A Virtual Tapestry of Resilience and Hope - From all corners of the globe, voices gathered for “Strength in Scarlet”—a powerful virtual art exhibition uniting hearts in the fight against sickle cell disease. Hosted by the inspiring Oluwafadekemi Ogundiya, the event was more than just a showcase of artistic talent; it was a profound celebration of the courage, creativity, and perseverance that flourishes even in the face of adversity. I must start with a moment of sincere regret. I truly wished to attend this visual inspiration and art exhibit, as it aligns perfectly with our work at Warrior Speak Out.org. However, being based here in Texas, the meeting time landed at a challenging 3:00 AM in the morning.</image:title>
<image:caption>I was sadly sleeping due to the vast time difference, and I am so disappointed I missed the opportunity to meet these amazing individuals and experience the collective energy live. Despite my absence, having reviewed the powerful themes and discussions, the spirit of the event resonated profoundly: reminding us all that sickle cell is a diagnosis, not our identity. These are my heartfelt words, the message I would have shared if I had been able to join you all at that hour.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Strength in Scarlet: A Virtual Tapestry of Resilience and Hope - Art as a Universal Language of Resilience and Pride As powerful artist statements were unveiled, guests were reminded that creativity is a universal language, especially potent in expressing resilience. "Get ready to feel, to reflect and be inspired," the host encouraged, setting the perfect tone for a day of deep engagement and community strength. It was particularly inspiring to know the talent of the featured artists, including the remarkable Timileyin Meleki and Abogunrin Bayo. I want to highlight that one of these featured participants in the "Be You, Be Proud" Art Contest I had the honor of hosting this past June for World Sickle Cell Day. This contest, which I would love to continue throughout the years, celebrates the artistic spirit within our community! These artists shared the profound motivations behind their creations. Their works, rich with symbolism around blood, scars, and longevity, spoke volumes—transforming personal pain into collective purpose and declaring that sickle cell is not a death sentence, but a journey of life, full and meaningful.</image:title>
<image:caption>Art, in this context, becomes a vital vessel for emotion and a powerful coping mechanism. When words fall short, the canvas, the dance floor, or the crafted object provides a sanctuary for the safe release of emotions. It is an act of reclaiming control, replacing feelings of being overwhelmed with the immense fulfillment and therapeutic power of creation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Love and Loss Revisited: October Reflections - Right before I went into the hospital, I celebrated my 10th wedding anniversary with my husband. We celebrated on October 7, marking 10 years together—a milestone filled with love, laughter, and gratitude. Little did I know that just days later, I would take sick. That contrast—joy followed by challenge—reminded me how life can shift so quickly, yet still hold purpose in every season.</image:title>
<image:caption>I was also discouraged that I couldn’t attend SC Red Reproductive woman’s panel on October 18 during the 53rd Annual SCDAA Convention, an opportunity I had prayed for and was so excited to receive earlier this year. Though I’ve been featured in magazines and my voice has been heard, stepping into this new season as an advocate and community health worker has brought both challenges and growth.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Love and Loss Revisited: October Reflections - After taking sick, everyone around me—including the director who reached out regarding the opportunity—encouraged me to step back and recover. At first, I felt like I was missing out, but that same day, October 18 also a workshop hosted by the local church I attend C.F.C.B.M.T. , Waiting to Exit Hell. I found myself exactly where I needed to be: at my church where Dr. Katrina Ferguson, a multi-millionaire entrepreneur, philanthropist, and powerful woman of God, was speaking.</image:title>
<image:caption>Her message reminded me that purpose doesn’t always show up in the way we expect. I couldn’t be in two places at once, but I was grateful for that divine redirection. Instead of being on the panel, I was in a space of learning, spiritual alignment, and clarity—gaining insight about how I want to move forward and continue impacting the sickle cell community through Red Stick Sickle Cell and Warriors Speak Out.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Love and Loss Revisited: October Reflections - Losing my sister in 2009 to this disease made it difficult to define my identity and who I was meant to become. I struggled for years, feeling as though time and opportunities were lost. But revisiting these reflections now, I see that loss can also bring clarity, lessons, wisdom, and discernment.</image:title>
<image:caption>This October, I’m reminded that even when life redirects our plans, there is still growth, purpose, and love in the journey. As I step into November and a milestone birthday—turning 40 on November 13—I do so with gratitude, faith, and a renewed commitment to growth, service, and advocacy. Life may shift our paths, but it never removes our purpose. It only teaches us to cherish the love, learn from the loss, and move forward with gratitude and grace. — Whitney</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Closing September, Welcoming October: Awareness to Legacy - September was about awareness, yes—but it was also about action, community, and remembrance. It was about showing up, even in the hard places, and choosing to turn grief into purpose. Now, as we enter October, we carry that awareness into a new theme: Love & Loss Revisited. This month, we will hold space for both the grief and the gratitude, the heartbreak and the healing.</image:title>
<image:caption>Because love does not end where loss begins—it becomes legacy. For the warriors we’ve lost. For the warriors still fighting. For the families who keep going. We will continue to show up.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - August’s Gift: Community and the Legacy We Create - Most Memorable time in August!</image:title>
<image:caption>Recovering from a car accident in July could have easily slowed me down, but instead, August became a month of unexpected blessings. I found myself sitting at dinner with Ryan Clark—an experience that reminded me of the power of connection and the importance of showing up even when life feels heavy. Those moments of community reminded me that we are never walking this road alone.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - August’s Gift: Community and the Legacy We Create - On a deeply personal note, August also marked a milestone: my son turned 16.</image:title>
<image:caption>He is my first child, my trait warrior, and a living testimony of God’s grace. His very presence reminds me that my purpose is rooted in more than just my own journey. The complications surrounding his birth could have left me hopeless, but now I watch him grow into a young man, and I know without a doubt—I am here for a reason. His life is my reminder that legacy is not just about what I leave behind, but what I nurture right now.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - August’s Gift: Community and the Legacy We Create - But August also carried a lesson: life does not always go as planned.</image:title>
<image:caption>Unexpected detours force us to adapt, to shift, to reimagine how we carry our vision forward. If we don’t allow ourselves to adjust, we risk losing sight of what really matters. In those shifts, I found God reminding me that purpose is not about perfection—it’s about presence.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How Our Partnership Strengthens My Advocacy - Advocacy can be heavy. There are days when using my voice feels like lifting a mountain. But my husband reminds me I don’t have to lift it alone. He’s not just a witness to my pain—he’s an active part of my healing and my fight. Whether it's encouraging me to rest before I burn out, standing beside me during tough conversations, or simply validating my lived experiences—his presence has become one of my greatest forms of power.</image:title>
<image:caption>Together, we’ve made our marriage more than a bond—it’s become a platform. A safe place. A space where I am never asked to minimize my truth for someone else’s comfort. In a world that often asks sickle cell warriors to shrink, this kind of love feels radical. This, to me, is liberation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Marriage and Sickle Cell: Lessons in Love and Support - When I first started dating my husband, I didn’t tell him I had sickle cell right away. I had been rejected before—made to feel like my condition was too much to handle. That pain lingered. But one night, during a crisis, I knew I had to tell him. I needed him. I expected hesitation, maybe even distance.</image:title>
<image:caption>But what I got was compassion. He didn’t fully understand sickle cell—he’d learned about it in school, but never truly encountered it in real life. Still, he stayed. He listened. And in that moment, I knew love could look like quiet strength.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Grace Carried Us: A Warrior Mother’s Legacy - But the deepest challenge hasn’t just been managing my own health—it’s been raising children with sickle cell trait, carrying the silent worry that life might someday call them to battle too.</image:title>
<image:caption>I call them my trait warriors. They carry part of my genetic story, but I pray they never carry the full weight of it. I teach them strength. I teach them awareness. I give them language to understand their bodies. But I’d be lying if I said I don’t lay awake at night praying for God’s hands to stay on them—to shield them from the uncertainty I’ve had to live through.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Grace Carried Us: A Warrior Mother’s Legacy - She didn’t always speak her grief, but she carried it. And in doing so, she taught me that even in pain, mothers keep showing up. Not because they don’t feel, but because they feel everything.</image:title>
<image:caption>This year, I want to honor her. I want to honor myself. And I want to honor every mother walking through silent storms. Especially those of us in the sickle cell community—those who wear strength like skin but quietly battle the toll that illness takes on our minds and spirits.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How Sickle Cell Advocacy Became My Calling - Her pain wasn't always visible—but it was always there. That’s the truth about sickle cell. Not all scars are visual. Some live deep in our bones, in the quiet breakdowns, the lost opportunities, the constant need to smile through it just to be taken seriously. And when Raven passed, it didn’t just break my heart—it opened my eyes wider to a system that desperately needs change.</image:title>

<image:caption>I never planned to become an advocate—it wasn’t a title I chased, but a calling I couldn’t ignore. I stepped into this space because I had to. <image:caption>This journey into motherhood will not be easy. It will push you to the edge, testing limits you never knew existed. There will be moments in that cold NICU, sitting beside your son’s tiny body, wires and machines keeping him stable, where you’ll feel powerless. Your body will ache, your spirit will shake, and exhaustion will settle into your bones. You will wonder if you did enough, if you prayed hard enough, if you are enough. You will cry—tears of pain, of guilt, of fear. But you will also laugh, so much more than you think.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Becoming a Mother in 2009 After Loss - This is a moment in the past I shared with my children, my husband in the back. This picture was taken on my birthday in 2021.</image:title>
<image:caption>Motherhood changed me, but it didn’t erase the pain of loss. Instead, it showed me that love doesn’t replace grief—it grows around it, making room for both. My son’s birth didn’t mean I stopped missing Raven, but it did remind me that life keeps giving us reasons to keep going. And though grief still walks beside me, I am learning to embrace it—not as something that holds me back, but as a reminder of how deeply I loved you. Always and forever, Whitney</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - A Sickle Cell Warrior’s Perspective with the Latest on Oxbryta Withdrawal - The Promise and Uncertainty of Gene Therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>Gene therapy is the buzzword I keep hearing. It’s this revolutionary idea that instead of treating the symptoms, doctors might be able to fix the faulty gene that causes sickle cell in the first place. For some, this sounds like a potential cure—a way to stop the disease at its core.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - A Sickle Cell Warrior’s Perspective with the Latest on Oxbryta Withdrawal - Holding on to Hope</image:title>
<image:caption>Living with sickle cell means learning to hold on to hope while accepting that there are no guarantees. Every new treatment, every clinical trial, brings the possibility of change. Maybe one of these drugs will be the breakthrough I’ve been waiting for. Maybe gene therapy really will be a cure. But for now, it’s hard not to feel like I’m walking a tightrope between excitement and uncertainty.</image:caption>
